As a parent or teacher, it can be disheartening to see a child struggle with motivation and interest in language learning. However, it's not uncommon for children to lose motivation and interest in language learning, and as parents and teachers, it's our responsibility to help them overcome these challenges.
So, what can you do to help your child overcome their lack of motivation and interest in language learning? I would like to share with you some tips and strategies to help your child overcome these challenges.
1. Find out why they are struggling
Understanding why a child is struggling to learn Mandarin is a crucial first step in dealing with their lack of motivation and interest in language learning. Here are some steps that parents and teachers can take to identify the root cause of the child's struggles:
Talk to the child. Ask the child about their experience with Mandarin learning. What do they find challenging? Which aspects of the language do they enjoy? Encourage them to be honest and open about their struggles, and try to listen without judgment.
Assess their learning style. Different children have different learning styles. Some children may learn best through visual aids, while others may learn better through hands-on activities. Observe how the child learns best and tailor your teaching approach accordingly.
Check their academic record. Look at the child's academic record to see if they struggle in other subjects as well. If they do, then the problem may not be specific to Mandarin learning but may be related to a more general learning difficulty.
Observe their behavior. Observe the child's behavior in class. Are they easily distracted or disengaged? Do they seem overwhelmed or anxious? These observations can help identify underlying emotional or psychological issues that may be affecting their learning.
Seek professional help. If the child's struggles persist, consider seeking professional help. A teacher or counselor may be able to identify any underlying learning disabilities, ADHD, or other issues that may be affecting the child's learning.
Once the reason/s on why the child's struggles has been identified, parents and teachers can take steps to address the issue. For example, if the child is struggling with Mandarin learning because they find the language too difficult, they can be provided with additional support and resources to help them improve. If the child is disengaged or easily distracted, a more interactive and engaging teaching approach may be needed.
2. Make it fun and engaging
One of the best ways to get kids interested in language learning is to make it fun and engaging; this is also my principle for more than a decade of teaching Mandarin to preschoolers. We can use games, songs, and other interactive activities to make the learning process more enjoyable. I will share a more in-depth discussion about this topic on my next blog.
3. Set achievable goals
Setting achievable goals can help your child feel more motivated and confident in their language learning journey. Start with small goals, such as learning a few new words or phrases each day, and gradually work your way up to larger goals, such as having a conversation using basic target (Mandarin) language.
4. Provide different learning-resources
We can also provide children with resources such as language-learning apps, websites, and books to help them practice outside of class. We can also encourage them to practice with native speakers, either in-person or online. This can help children see the value in learning the language and give them a chance to practice with someone who speaks the language fluently.

5. Be patient and supportive
Learning a new language takes time, and it’s important to be patient and supportive with your child. Celebrate their successes, no matter how small, and encourage them to keep trying even when they feel discouraged.
Helping your child overcome their lack of motivation and interest in language learning requires patience, creativity, and a willingness to try new approaches. Understanding and working on the child's interest can help the child develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed in their language learning journey.
