清明节 (qīng míng jié) or Tomb Sweeping Day is a traditional Chinese festival that is celebrated on April 4th or 5th each year. It is a time to honor and pay respects to one's ancestors and to clean and tend to their graves. The holiday has been observed for over 2,500 years and is deeply rooted in Chinese culture and traditions.
清明节 originated from the ancient Chinese practice of "cold food festival" (寒食节) which started during the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BC). According to historical records, a loyal minister named Jie Zitui (介子推) cut a piece of flesh from his own leg to make soup for his hungry prince, who had been forced to flee and live in the mountains. When the prince eventually returned to power, he rewarded those who helped him, but forgot about Jie. Years later, Jie chose to retreat into the mountains with his mother and refused to see the prince. In order to find Jie, the prince ordered a fire to be set in the mountains. Unfortunately, Jie and his mother died in the fire. The prince was deeply remorseful and ordered that the day of his death be designated as a day of mourning, which later became known as the "cold food festival."
During the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), the cold food festival was combined with the practice of tomb sweeping, which was already a common tradition during the spring equinox. In the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), 清明节 was officially established as a national holiday and has been observed ever since.

During 清明节, people typically visit the graves of their ancestors to clean and tend to them. This involves removing weeds, tidying up the area around the grave, and offering flowers, incense, and food as a sign of respect. Many families also burn joss paper (金纸) which is believed to be money that can be used by ancestors in the afterlife.
In addition to tomb sweeping, 清明节 is also a time to enjoy the beauty of spring and reconnect with nature. It is common for people to go for walks, fly kites, and have picnics with family and friends. Eating 清明节 foods such as qingtuan (青团), a green rice cake, and cold dishes made from the new spring vegetables is also a tradition.
